Benefits of a Green Roof
All green roofs have many benefits for the environment, as well as making a great design statement.
Green roofs absorb carbon dioxide as well as releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, helping to filter out pollutants and dust at the same time.
Green roofs increase the insulation of the building, so the building uses less energy to
heat and also cool it.
Green roofs help to increase biodiversity, which in turn encourages potentially endangered species, such as bees and butterflies to thrive. Other species such as bats and birds can also be encouraged by the installation of boxes to encourage their roosting.
Endangered plant species can be reintroduced to areas with the added protection of being on a roof.
Green roofs dramatically reduce stormwater runoff, with some studies suggesting by
up to 70%, helping to alleviate flooding in problem areas.
Having a green roof also opens the roof up as an area that can be used for
recreation, with pathways and patios installed, a rooftop can become an extra living
space for entertainment or relaxation.
